Let's get together to see Poetry (시), which has been rated as one of the greatest classics of modern South Korean cinema. An unsentimental story of an elderly woman confronted by her own mortality and by her grandchild’s utter indifference to morality. "Grandmother Mi Ja works part-time as a caretaker, and struggles to raise a teen grandson by herself. Despite her tough situation, she speaks softly, dresses fashionably, and approaches the world with child-like curiosity. Enrolling in a poetry class, she endeavors to capture life in verse form, but her simple dream of completing a poem is stalled by the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease and the heavy financial and emotional burden of her grandson’s shocking wrongdoing." https://letterboxd.com/film/poetry/ Part of the Lee Chang-dong retrospective at the Cinematheque. https://thecinematheque.ca/series/fearful-symmetry-the-films-of-lee-changdong After the screening, we'll find a spot nearby to get something to drink or eat and chat about the film.

Looking forward to seeing this on Friday! I'm thinking I might plan to go grab a bite to eat before the show, perhaps at one of the nearby Korean places to stay on-theme! If anyone is interested in joining me, fire me a message..

I recently saw Lee Chang-dong's 2018 film Burning, an amazing, beautiful, powerful work. Really looking forward to this Friday's Poetry!

The film was a gut punch, relentlessly confronting the ugliness and the beauty of life, taking us into the heart of another "culture of entitlement, silence and protection" and waiting practically to the end of this devastating journey to show us through her words and actions the inner conviction and strength of the protagonist and the beautiful humanity of her worldview. Well that was my take, I realize YMMV. I was pleased to meet you Illiak, and happy to see you again Susan, Aleesa and Lee.
