DOXA Film Festival Selection: “20
days in Mariupol” screening at the Cinematheque

Details

Hey Everyone, You are welcome to join me in attending this film at the Cinematheque in Vancouver (Tuesday May 9). The film begins at 6:15pm. Given that the film is part of the DOXA Film Festival, it might be advisable to purchase a ticket in advance. Following the film, if you’re available, we can gather at a local establishment and enjoy one another’s company. Here is a summary of the film: 20 Days in Mariupol “My brain will desperately want to forget all this, but the camera will not let it happen.” Mstyslav Chernov and two Associated Press colleagues (Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko) risked their lives to stay behind in Mariupol, Ukraine, after other journalists left. From the first shelling of residential neighbourhoods at the outbreak of the war, their footage captures in vivid detail the escalating atrocities of Russia’s invasion, and the devastating toll imposed on the city’s trapped citizens as they struggle to stay alive. Isolated from the rest of the world, these three journalists continue to document and do as much as possible in their fight to expose images of a broken city, bearing witness and calling for help from the international community. Unsparing in its details, from the mass graves to the bloodbaths in hospitals and elsewhere. It’s both urgent and necessary and provides a complex time capsule of the war. - Randy Myers, SAN JOSE MERCURY Please note that this film contains vivid and potentially disturbing images of war, including gore. Under B.C. law, any person wishing to see an unclassified film such as this one must be a registered member of The Documentary Media Society and be 18 years of age or older.
