"What is my crime?" asks Tanavoli in the cartoon by Iranian illustrator Mana Neyestani. The response by the armed guard refers to police accusations that his sculptures disturb the public peace... Join me this Saturday afternoon at the Vancouver Art Gallery in discovery of Canadian-Iranian sculptor Parviz Tanavoli. First we are are invited to a talk, indeed a conversation, with curators Dr. Fereshteh Daftari (formerly of MoMA) and Dr. Venetia Porter (British Museum), who will introduce us to the world of Parviz Tanavoli. https://www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/events/july8parvizlecture Afterwards, we can discuss and explore together an exhibition of his works: "Poets, Locks, Cages" https://www.vanartgallery.bc.ca/exhibitions/parviztanavoli/

Thanks for organizing this James. I know these artists and activists and I'm sure it's going to be an interesting event. I have some another thing already planned for Saturday, so I will be joining for a couple of hours and then have to leave.
James
Sounds good, it'll be great to see you. If not already done, do register to save a seat at the event, only 4 places remaining I think: https://tickets.vanartgallery.bc.ca/events/0188bb1e-9c23-703b-99f8-222c8eceba21

Hi all. When I was preparing to post this hangout there were initially no more tickets available. I emailed the gallery asking about it, and they suddenly released some more tickets and booked one for me. The site says they've run out again, but yeah I'd be tempted to give standby a go if you weren't able to book a spot.
James
Doesn't look like they will release any more tickets online. They've sent me an email saying there's been extra high demand, the event is totally sold out, and to come extra early, doors at 1:30. I'm not super hopeful about standby tickets. Sorry folks, I wish I'd spotted the event earlier and had been able to give you more advance notice.
James
Registration for the talk is free of charge for anyone with a VAG admission ticket or Members pass
